After nine years of working as an IT engineer, Portia took a leap of faith that would see her own one of the fastest growing skin care brands in South Africa.

Portia Mngomezulu is the founder of Portia M Solutions, a company that manufactures skin care products using Marula oil as a primary ingredient.

She started the company in 2012 after her mother-in-law advised her about the skin healing effects of Marula oil.

“I discovered the power of Marula after I had my first child and was dealing with stretch marks. My mother-in-law advised me to try Marula oil because that’s what they used when she was younger.”

Mngomezulu tried the Marula oil and was amazed at the results. That’s when she spotted a business opportunity.

With just two hundred rands, she bought Marula oil directly from rural women in Limpopo province (South Africa) and bottled it herself.

“I started selling the oil to my friends. They loved it and kept coming back.”

Noticing the demand for her products, she approached a third party manufacturer and laboratory called Brunational in Sebenza for testing.

After getting the stamp of approval from the South African Bureau of Standards, Portia still struggled to convince big retailers to stock her products.

She kept knocking on many doors and finally received a positive response from Makro.

Nowadays, Portia M skin solutions has a range of 12 products for men and women, available at almost all major retail stores across South Africa.

Portia M Solutions has grown from a side business into a multi-million rand business with 27 full-time employees. The company product line is also available in Swaziland, Namibia and Botswana.

In 2018, Portia scooped a Pick ‘n Pay award as Small Supplier of the Year.

She was also an overall winner at The Female Entrepreneur and Young Farmer Awards 2018/2019 held by Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Moreover, she won the Top entrepreneur Sector award in Agroprocessing and the Female Entrepreneur of the year award 2018/19.
